The Oscar-nominated actor who played Bilbo Baggins in 'The Lord of the Rings' has died

  • Holm died "peacefully in hospital" and his illness was related to Parkinson's, his agent told The Guardian.

Ian Holm, the actor known for his portrayal of Bilbo Baggins in four "The Lord of the Rings" films, has died at age 88, his agent confirmed to the Guardian.

Holm was also celebrated for his Oscar-nominated performance in "Chariots of Fire,"a role in 1979's "Alien", and many roles in theater.

The actor reportedly died "peacefully" in a hospital and had a Parkinson's related illness.

"Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely," his agent told The Guardian.

Holm played more than 100 roles in films and on television in his lifetime.

A former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a veteran of the stage, Holm won a Tony award in 1967 for his performance in Harold Pinter's "The Homecoming" and a Laurence Olivier Award in 1998 playing the title role of "King Lear."

The actor took a hiatus from the stage in 1976 after dealing with a severe case of stage fright in during a production of "The Iceman Cometh."

Holm was born in Goodmayes, Essex, UK on September 12, 1931 to Scottish parents Jean Wilson and James Harvey Cuthbert. Holm had five children.
