Fiat Chrysler is recalling around 1 million cars because they might roll away while parked

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling hundreds of thousands of its vehicles after 41 injuries were caused by a confusing gear-selector design that's used on several of its car models, USA Today reports.

The number of cars to be recalled is up in the air right now. USA Today says the number of recalls is around 900,000, but Reuters says Fiat Chrysler will recall roughly 1.1 million cars.

The cars involved are some 2014 and 2015 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees, as well as some 2012 to 2014 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s.

The confusion stems from

drivers exiting their cars while the vehicle's still running with the thought that they had engaged the "Park" gear. Because the gear selector used on these vehicles in designed to return to a centered position no matter which gear you're in, drivers have to rely on lit-up lettering to tell which gear they're in.

There are sounds that go off when drivers exit these vehicles while the car is running and in-gear, but they don't seem to be doing their job.

This recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and FCA decided to dig into the issue.

Fiat Chrysler was not immediately available for comment.
