The Supreme Court of India granted bail to the former media executive Indrani Mukerjea in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case. She was accused of killing Sheena Bora, her 25-year-old daughter.

A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and AS Bopanna granted her bail subject to all those conditions on which Peter Mukerjea (the other accused) was granted bail in February 2020.

Indrani moved the Supreme Court in February 2020 after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) denied her bail requests on multiple occasions. It was known to have opposed her bail, in the Supreme Court as well.

Who is Indrani Mukerjea and what is Sheena Bora murder case?


Indrani Mukerjea co-founded INX Media with her ex-husband Peter Mukerjea and was the CEO of the company till 2009. In November 2008, The Wall Street Journal named her as one of 50 Women to Watch.

In 2015, she was arrested by the Mumbai Police and charged as the main accused in her daughter’s murder case. Bora was Indrani’s daughter from first marriage with Siddhartha Das.

Here’s the timeline of the events in the case —



April 2012 — A 25-year-old girl Sheena Bora goes missing, and does not show up to work. According to media reports, no FIR was lodged by her family members.

August 2015 — Three years after she goes missing, Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria receives an anonymous tip that she has been murdered. The police arrest her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, and driver Shyamvar Pinturam Rai. Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna was also arrested in Kolkata.

Indrani’s driver Rai confesses that he murdered Bora and disposed her body. Later on, Indrani too confessed to her role in the murder.

September 2015 — The case was handed over to the CBI which filed an FIR against Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna and Shyamvar Rai, and arrested Peter Mukerjea.

November 2015 — CBI files a chargesheet that Sheena had an affair with Rahul Mukerjea, one of Peter Mukerjea’s sons. They both could have ended up with a lot of property, if they got married. It also claimed that Indrani spoke to Sanjeev about it. The CBI alleged that Peter was involved in a conspiracy to keep Bora's disappearance out of the public eye.

October 2019 — Indrani Mukerjea and Peter Mukerjea part ways.

January 2020 — All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) medical examiner confirms that Bora was strangled to death, reportedly.

March 2020 — Peter Mukerjea walks out of jail after four years. The Bombay High Court concluded that there is no prime evidence to prove his involvement.

July 2021 — A special CBI court rejects Indrani’s plea for bail and holds her for playing an active role in the murder.

August 2021 — The CBI closed down the investigation on the case and Rai turned into an approver.

December 2021 — Indrani claims that her daughter is alive and possibly living in Kashmir.

May 2022 — The Supreme Court grants bail to Indrani Mukerjea and notes that the case is based on circumstantial evidence.
