The entire country is enveloped with fear and people are confined to homes, thanks to the chain spread of the novel Coronavirus. In the last few days, Delhi NCR and Mumbai have declared many of its hotspots as ‘containment zones.’

Today, Faridabad declared 13 containment zones to prevent the spread in the neighbouring areas — after several positive cases were reported in the city. Delhi declared three containment zones at — Dilshad Garden, Nizzamuddin and South Moti Bagh.

In South Delhi, the Delhi State Cancer Institute is one of the containment zones. This was after 18 people — 16 nurses and two doctors were tested positive for Coronavirus recently. Meanwhile, Nizamuddin — where the positive cases spiked suddenly after the Markaz in March, is undergoing a massive sanitation drive including spraying of disinfectants via fire engines and drones.

On the other hand, Mumbai, which has been the epicentre of the disease has over 240 containment zones. This was after it registered 100 new cases on Tuesday (April 7). Overall, the total number of infectious cases in Maharashtra stands at 1,018 — including 64 who died.

At this point in time, India has over 5,000 people infected and the virus has already killed 149 people.

What are containment zones?

According to the Health Ministry, a 'containment zone' is a geographical boundary defined as per the number of positive cases in the area so as to contain the disease.

Each and every individual living in the areas that are designated containment zones will have to undergo aggressive screening, thermal scanning tests. And all the residential plots and households will be sanitized by the Municipal Corporation teams.

These containment zones are sealed by the police force and barricades.

In fact, the state governments imposed movement restrictions. Even the vegetable vendors are not allowed to enter. Essential items such as milk, medicine and groceries shall be delivered to every household.

Here is how it works?

Based on the number of Coronavirus cases, the authorities identify containment zones and buffer zones.

While any outsider is barred from entering the zone, even professionals who would enter to deliver any essential items “shall be given a chemo-prophylactic dose of hydroxy-chloroquine” — the anti-malarial drug which is expected to cure Coronavirus.
