One firefighter was killed and another was injured after an off-duty firefighter opened fire at a Los Angeles County fire station in Agua Dulce, California, on Tuesday morning.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed that a "tragic shooting" occurred at 10:55 a.m. PT at Station 81.

At a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Los Angeles County officials said that a 44-year-old male firefighter specialist died from "multiple" gunshot wounds in the upper torso.

"He was a brave, committed, loyal member of our department for over 20 years," Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby said.

The gunman also shot a 54-year-old male fire captain who was transported to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery. Officials said he remains in critical but stable condition.

The gunman was an off-duty firefighter specialist who also worked at Station 81, according to authorities, who did not offer a motive.

Following the shooting, officials said the suspect barricaded himself in his house about 10 miles from the station. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a fire call at the residence around that time. The large home was set on fire and burned almost completely, as seen on a KABC-TV livestream of the scene.

While containing the location, authorities saw an individual in a pool outside the house who appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities said they are fairly confident the individual is the shooter but couldn't be 100% certain because the house is still burning and cannot be safely approached.

Officials said they do not believe anyone else was in the home.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident and conducting witness and family interviews.

Officials said there were four people on shift at the time of the shooting, including the fire captain, specialist, and two firefighters.
