Meat ban has hit UP’s meat export business harder than you can imagine

Uttar Pradsh CM Yogi Adityanath’s decision to ban all illegal slaughterhouses in the state has severely affected the state's meat export business, while also posing a threat in the form of increasing unemployment amongst people who used to work at these places.As per meat exporters from India’ biggest state, so far, export orders worth Rs 4,000 crore have been cancelled and 30,000 workers have lost their jobs.

Uttar Pradesh makes up a major part of the meat export units from India, having exported Rs 7,285 crore worth of buffalo meat from April to December 2016. These units also employ lakhs of people.
Export of Indian buffalo meat goes to 70 countries, including Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia along with the Middle East.

"Before the new government came to power, we were supplying 200 tonnes of meat from our Aligarh unit, worth Rs 40 crore per day, to various countries. Daily supplies have fallen to 35 tonnes now," said Ayaz Siddiqui, GM, Aligarh's Allana Exports.
