Domino's Pizza has plenty of indulgent options on its menu, but it's possible to eat there while hitting your protein and fitness goals, nutritionists told Insider.

Eating enough protein is key if you want to lose fat, build or maintain muscle, and perform well athletically, because it helps muscles recover from workouts and keeps you full.

US adults are advised to eat 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight a day, but active people may require more to help with muscle growth and repair.

Dietitian Alix Turoff told Insider there are options at Domino's Pizza that would "keep your calories in check while still getting a good amount of protein, and keeping the volume of food high."

And nutritionist and fat loss coach Jordan Syatt told Insider that if your diet is mostly nutritious foods, having whatever you want occasionally, even if it doesn't fit your nutrition goals, doesn't make a difference to your progress in the long-run.

Nutritionists and dietitians previously told Insider what they would order at McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Subway, Burger King, and Taco Bell.

Here's what three registered nutrition experts told Insider they'd order for a high-protein meal at Domino's Pizza.

If you want to keep your calories down, Turoff recommends choosing thin crust over thick, which saves 80 calories per slice.

One slice of cheese pizza from a large (14-inch) pie with a Thin and Crispy crust comes in at 210 calories, 11 grams of fat, 18 grams of carbs, and nine grams of protein.

"You could customize your pizza by adding veggies for more volume and fiber," Turoff said.

Alongside the pizza slice, Turoff would add four hot buffalo wings, which provide 260 calories, 20 grams of fat, nine grams of carbs, and 15 grams of protein.

"I'd round out the meal by ordering the classic garden salad which consists of grape tomatoes, red onion, carrots, red cabbage, cheddar cheese, brioche garlic croutons, over romaine and iceberg lettuce, and comes in at 80 calories, four grams of fat, eight grams of carbs, and three grams of protein," she said.

Turoff said she would add Domino's lightest dressing option, Ken's Lite Balsamic with Olive Oil, and only use half the packet, which adds 50 calories, four grams of fat, 2.5 grams of carbs, and no protein.

In total, Turoff's order has 600 calories, 39 grams of fat, 37.5 grams of carbs, and 27 grams of protein.

Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine said she loves pizza and eats it at least once a week at home, usually with a side salad for extra greens, plus a Diet Coke, diet lemonade, or water.

Pizza provides a "great balance of macros," containing carbs, protein, and fat, as well as micronutrients from the tomato sauce and any vegetable toppings too, she said.

Ludlam-Raine said she would order a medium Thin and Crispy Crust Vegi Supreme Pizza, which has 1,137 calories, 44 grams of fat, 138 grams of carbs, and 47 grams of protein.

"Going for thin crust with extra vegetables as a topping is a great way of keeping it both healthy and balanced," she said.

Jordan Syatt: Large pepperoni pizza

Syatt told Insider he would order a large pepperoni pizza "because pepperoni pizza is the best pizza of all of the pizzas."

"I'm not eating at Domino's every day or even every week, so when I do go there, I'm going to order what I want, what I enjoy the most," he said.

A large pepperoni pizza has 2,642 calories, 122 grams of fat, 264 grams of carbs, and 122 grams of protein.

The majority of Syatt's diet is minimally processed whole foods with lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, and lean protein, he said.

"When I do enjoy myself like 20% of the time and have a treat, I'm going to enjoy it fully," he said. "I'm not going to try and get a fake, healthy version. So when I do go to Domino's, you better believe like I'm going to get a large pepperoni pizza."
