Queens McDonald's Ends Standoff With Elderly Men Who Refused To Leave

The elderly patrons had drawn the ire of McDonald's managers for sitting in the restaurant daily from sunrise to sunset without ordering more than a couple of cups of coffee and a bag of fries. The restaurant said it was losing money because customers couldn't find a seat, and McDonald's called the police on the group several times.
The two sides finally came to an understanding after a meeting Sunday at Queens Assemblyman Ron Kim's office, The New York Times reports.
As part of the resolution, the group will be allowed to continue sitting at the restaurant daily, except between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The owner of the restaurant, Jack Bert, also agreed to post signs in Korean and Chinese explaining the new policy.
In interviews with The New York Times, the elderly patrons admitted that many of them disliked McDonald's food.
"They come every single day to gossip, chat about politics back home and in their adopted land," The Times' Sarah Maslin Nir and Jiha Ham wrote. In many cases, they just showed up for the company of others.
