Tesla is flying out 12 'Golden Ticket' winners to see the Gigafactory, Willy Wonka style
Dave Smith/Tech Insider
We first learned about the news on Electrek, which managed to obtain an email from one of the lucky winners. The following email was sent from goldenticket@tesla.com on Wednesday:
Hello,
Congratulations! Through random selection, Tesla has chosen twelve Golden Ticket winners from all those that placed Model 3 Reservations on the opening date to receive an all-expenses paid trip to our Gigafactory Grand Opening event on July 29th, 2016 in Reno, Nevada. We are excited to share that your name was chosen in this drawing and that we'd like to invite you and a guest to join us at the event.
Round trip economy class airfare, transportation, and accommodations will be provided. Tickets are non-transferable. For additional details and to redeem your package, please contact goldenticket@tesla.com.
We look forward to seeing you and your guest at the event!
Best regards, The Tesla Team
Tesla received roughly 325,000 pre-orders for the Model 3 in its first week of availability, with about 150,000 of those pre-orders coming on the first day. So, anyone who pre-ordered the car that day had a 0.008% chance of winning a Golden Ticket to see the Gigafactory opening.
The grand opening of the Gigafactory is happening on July 29. For those unfamiliar, the 5.5 million square-foot Gigafactory is an ambitious manufacturing facility designed to build batteries for Tesla's electric cars for the foreseeable future. Tesla describes it as a way to "accelerate the world's transition to sustainable transportation." You can learn more about the Gigafactory here.
