A member of the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division was arrested in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and charged with multiple counts of sex-related offenses on Wednesday.
Sgt. Andrew Lawrence Porter of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree forcible-sex offense, and first-degree kidnapping.
Porter, 31, was with his unit in Afghanistan and returned to face the charges, The Fayetteville Observer said.
An arrest warrant seen by The Fayetteville Observer said the alleged offenses took place on March 24. The 2nd Battalion of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment - based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina - deployed to Afghanistan in June, The Observer reported this summer.
Bond for the two second-degree offenses was set at $225,000, while bond for the kidnapping charge was $75,000.
Porter is being held at the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office detention center. His first court appearance was Thursday afternoon, a sheriff's office representative told Business Insider.
It was not immediately known if Porter has legal representation. His next court appearance will likely be in October, the sheriff's office representative said.
Fort Bragg is the largest military base in the world by population, home to about 57,000 active-duty personnel. In addition to the 82nd Airborne, US Army Special Operations Command and Joint Special Operations Command are based there.
