The association, "Moabit hilft" stated on social media that the man, who has not yet been named, fell ill after waiting in the cold for four days.
The organisation shared a post on Twitter saying: "We are mourning you. You were 24 years old. You were from Syria. You survived so much. You did not survive the LAGeSo (German abbreviation for the State Office for Health and Social Affairs). You got a fever, shivering fits, cardiac arrest. You died last night. We are crying."
The exact background surrounding the refugee's death are still unclear as the organisation's claims are currently being investigated. According to German news site rbb, the police are not yet aware of a death in a hospital that matches the description, but hospitals only notify police in cases of unnatural deaths.
A spokesman for the Department for Health and Social Services told German news site Spiegel Online they had no confirmation that a refugee had died during the night.
Hundreds of refugees stand in front of the State Office for Health and Social Affairs in Berlin every day waiting to get an appointment or to attend one. The office is responsible for processing asylum requests and hands out temporary IDs to refugees as well as benefits.

Volunteer Reyna Bruns wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday morning about how the man died. She said he suffered a cardiac arrest while in an ambulance and later died in hospital. In her post, Bruns details how she called the emergency doctor when she noticed the refugee's fever and shivering.
Bruns' Facebook post has also been reported on by European news website The Local.
Rbb reports that a spokeswoman for "Moabit hilft," Diana Henniges, confirmed the news. She told rbb that the refugee probably got sick waiting in the cold for so long. "The warm tents in front of the State Office for Health and Social Affairs can only accommodate 200 people, but in the last weeks, there have been up to 600 people who had to wait oustide in the cold," Henniges told rbb.
