Dustin Friedland, 30, was Christmas shopping at New Jersey's The Mall of Short Hills when two suspects approached in the parking lot and shot him in the head, according to the New York Daily News.

The suspects took then off in the couple's 2012 Range Rover, the Daily News reports. The car was later found abandoned in a Newark garage.

Friedland worked as an intellectual property lawyer in Manhattan.

He and his wife, Jamie, were planning to have their first child, according to the newspaper.

A law enforcement source told the New York Post that Friedland didn't struggle when approached by the perpetrators. The source also said that a stolen car ring could be to blame.

"It was violent. The victim did not struggle. The perp just shot him in the head," a source said. "The perps may be part of a stolen car ring that's been hitting the tri-state the last few months."

Friedman's uncle Mark Schare told MailOnline that he hopes the alleged shooter is caught and punished.

"I hope they catch him and kill him," the uncle said. "I'm not a violent person but this criminal doesn't deserve to breathe."
