During the coronavirus pandemic, every other day news about layoffs and pay cuts are rising from the Indian startup sector. And while there's a job crisis looming in the startup sector, some startups continue to hire and keep up their promises.

While unicorns like Dream11, Icertis are looking to hire throughout the year, Urban Company has just onboarded 130 people even during the lockdown. Out of the 131 hired, 59 are freshers.

In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, co-founder and CEO of Urban Company Abhiraj Singh Bhal said that the company has kept all the job offers it had rolled out and has virtually onboarded the new employees.

The new joinees are from colleges like Harvard Business School ISB, IITs, IIM, LSR, NSIT, DCE, BITS PILANI among others and were hired for customer and partner support, business development and technology.

In the financial year ending March 2020, Urban Company’s revenue more than doubled to ₹216 crore, a little over half of which came from the beauty and wellness vertical. Its last reported valuation is close to $1 billion.

Urban Company (earlier called Urban Clap) had grown in popularity for offering at home repair services and salon services at the click of a button. However, Urban Company’s services had been hit during the coronavirus pandemic. With the relaxations in the lockdown, the startup has now begun its services across the country.
