Well, Ajay Devgan’s NY Cinema in Ratlam just did that.
The Bollywood actor, who started his career in 1991 Phool aur Kaante, plans to invest as much as ₹600 crore (approx $87 million) to bring old-world charm of watching movies with unique concept theatres.
Speaking about the NY Cinema, Rajeev Sharma, CEO told Business Insider India that people don’t spend much time in cinemas nowadays. “We go to the cinema, watch the movie, and come back right after it ends. Ajay is very fond of cinema-going experience and wants to offer the same to people of every age group.”
Sharma believes that there are a few movies which will force us to step out of the house and go to the cinema. “We cannot watch an X-men or an Avengers movie at home. We will miss the aura.”
Its biggest attraction is its architectural beauty that is the railways-inspired interior which transports you through the different ages of the train, and how it has evolved both in India and the cinema.
The NY Cinemas in Ratlam is inspired by the famous train scene of ‘Jab We Met’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.
Guess What? The theme of theatre changes with the city. Next time, don’t be surprised if you get to see the famous village-themed theatre inspired by the iconic movie Sholay.
Love going back in time? the interiors also include a Photo Time Machine where movie-goers can teleport themselves to a different era, even dimensions, and go home with memories that will last forever.
Devgn felt the old-time charm of going to single-screens is lost. He wants to bring that back but without compromising on modern amenities and international standards of audio, video, and comfort.
Apart from Ratlam, the cinema is operational in 7 cities including Hapur, Greater Noida, Pilkhuwa, Rae Bareli, Ghazipur, Bhuj, and Surendranagar
The brand new cinema has 452 seating capacity — which so far is the highest in Ratlam.
If the logistics are favourable, NY Cinemas will have 40-45 screen by the end of March 2020, said Rajeev Sharma.
NY Cinemas is named after Ajay Devgan’s daughter Nysa and son Yug
In the times large streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime are gaining popularity, NY Cinema is betting big on smaller cities to stand out in the cinema going experience.
