The rate at which India’s COVID-19 cases are increasing is diminishing. The number of new coronavirus infections reported daily across the country dropped below 60,000, even as the total tally inched towards 72 lakh. The country has recorded less than 75,000 new infections daily for the fifth consecutive day and fatalities below 1,000 for ten straight days.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit with 15 lakh cases, including 40,514 deaths, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

These are the worst-hit COVID-19 states in the country —

  • Maharashtra
Maharashtra remains the worst-hit coronavirus state in the country. It recorded over 7,000 new COVID-19 cases yesterday — it’s lowest in months. So far, Maharashtra has recorded 40,514 deaths due to coronavirus.

  • Karnataka
Karnataka has 115,795 COVID-19 cases and has so far recorded 10,036 deaths. The government is trying to control the rising COVID-19 infection. In the last 24 hours, it reported Karnataka had added 7,606 new cases — a drop from daily highest of over 10,000. CM Yediyurappa has announced a three-week holiday for schools from October 12 to 30.

  • Tamil Nadu
For the first time in 83 days, new COVID-19 cases have dropped below 5,000 in Tamil Nadu. It has 43,747 active cases and has recorded 10,314 deaths so far.

  • Andhra Pradesh
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Andhra Pradesh has over 43,000 COVID-19 active cases and has witnessed 6,256 deaths. On October 12, Andhra Pradesh recorded overall 7 lakh COVID-19 recoveries. It now has the second-highest recovery rate in the country at 93.5%.

  • Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh has 38,815 COVID-19 cases and has so far recorded 6,438 deaths due to coronavirus. The UP government is preparing to re-open all schools in a graded manner with 50% attendance from October 15.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, India conducted 10,73,014 sample tests in a single day on Monday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 8,89,45,107.
