India is inching towards the 30-lakh COVID cases tally. And this journey has taken 200 days since the emergence of the first case in January-end. While the fourth case was registered only in March, the cases have seen an alarming rise over the last few months. On August 20. India reported 64,531 new cases of COVID 19 in a single day. This is the highest one day spike the country has reported yet.

So far, India has reported over 29 lakh coronavirus cases, while the recoveries stood at 21,58,946 — pushing the recovery rate to 74.30%, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

As many as 8 states in the country — Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal and Bihar — have reported over 100,000 COVID-19 cases.

1. Maharashtra

The situation remains worrisome in Maharashtra, which continues to record over 10,000 cases every day. The total cases in the state stand at 6,43,289 with 21,359 fatalities, both the highest in the country. It is the only state which has over 500,000 cases.

2. Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has reported 3,61,435 COVID-19 cases so far. Chennai alone has over 12,000 cases,

3. Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh follows with 3,25,396 cases and 3,001 deaths. Over 2.35 lakh people have recovered from the disease. Even though Andhra Pradesh has more cases than Karnataka, the latter has a higher fatality rate.

4. Karnataka
Karnataka’s total coronavirus case tally crossed the 2.5 lakh mark. It has over 82,000 active COVID-19 cases and has also witnessed over 4,400 fatalities due to coronavirus. The state’s recovery rate stands at 65%. It recently launched an online system for people to easily access the coronavirus test.

5. Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh recently breached the one lakh-mark to become the fifth most-affected state in the country. As per the data available on the Health Ministry's website, it has logged 1,72, 334 coronavirus cases and 2733 deaths. It is recording more than 5,000 cases per day.

Meanwhile, the number of daily coronavirus cases in Delhi has come down since hitting a peak on June 23.
