According to a university official, the fire broke out at 9.30 pm near the boundary towards the Nallagandla side. Some people living in the neighbouring area noticed the fire and alerted the university staff.
"About 20 security guards and 15 to 20 students reached to put out the fire by 11:15 pm with the help of portable fire extinguishers. A fire engine also was called from Gachibowli which helped in completely putting out the fire," a university spokesman told IANS.
Here are some horrifying pictures from the fire:
The University of Hyderabad is spread over 2500 to 3000 acres and is home to several rare species of bird and wild animals like the spotted deer, wild boar, monitor lizard and Asian palm civet.
Students say the university witnesses six to seven fires every year but in light of the this being the second incident in two weeks, it has raised concerns about the safety of wildlife.
The fire incident last week burnt dry grass across six to eight acres. Whereas, a huge fire in February this year had burnt dry grass across 150 acres of land towards Gopichand Badminton Academy side of the university campus.
Last night, the fire broke out after some people cooked a meal inside the university leaving stones to balance the utensils and ashes at the site. Students say the university doesn’t have basic fire safety mechanisms in place. On the other hand, the university authorities said they were trying to procure additional fire-fighting equipment to tackle such situations.
