- The National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a statement saying Alabamians "deemed Roy Moore unfit to serve" following Democrat Doug Jones' victory against the Republican candidate Moore in Alabama's special election.
- The NRSC said it hoped Jones would choose "to vote with the Senate Republican Majority."
Following Democrat Doug Jones' surprising upset of Republican candidate Roy Moore in Alabama's special election Tuesday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a quizzical statement blasting its own candidate and calling on Jones to vote with the Republican caucus.
"Tonight's results are clear - the people of Alabama deemed Roy Moore unfit to serve in the US Senate," said NRSC chairman and Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner.
Jones' campaign received broad support from Democrats and several sitting Republican senators. The next line from Gardner's statement suggested that the first Democratic senator-elect from Alabama since 1992 should consider voting with the other other caucus.
"I hope Senator-elect Doug Jones will do the right thing and truly represent Alabama by choosing to vote with the Senate Republican Majority," Gardner said.
Other Republican officials also appeared to show support for Jones and distaste for Moore, who has been battling a continuing stream of sexual misconduct allegations.
Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!
