'When I wake up, I don't know what he's going to tweet about': Nikki Haley offers a revealing take on Trump's social-media habits
- Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, talked about President Donald Trump's tweeting habits.
- Haley said the tweets made her job "interesting" and on some occassions, took her by surprise.
- She also said UN officials were "glued" to the US president's social-media musings.
US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley discussed President Donald Trump's tweets, which often raise eyebrows among officials at the UN.
"This clearly is a president who likes social media," Haley said during a moderated discussion with CNN commentator David Axelrod at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics on Thursday. "And so for everybody that, you know, doesn't like his tweets, it's not going to stop, that's who he is, it's what he does," Haley said.
She said Trump's online musings took her by surprise on several occasions.
"I think it's interesting in that when I wake up, I don't know what he's going to tweet about," Haley said as she laughed. "So you know, you're always kind of moving through life with his tweets in mind."
Haley described how Trump's activity on Twitter affects how the US is viewed among the international community.
"I found that in the UN, they're like glued to his tweets," Haley said. "So everything he says or does they take seriously. That's the president speaking. So it takes out the media, it takes out everything else."
"And they react accordingly. So if we're trying to push something against chemical weapons and he puts something out there, they take that very seriously."
Trump's presence on Twitter has been a source of contention between him and his own staff throughout his presidency.
