The newer version of the Ecobee3 is compatible with Apple's smart home software.

Apple is getting a smart thermostat of its own. Well, sort of.

The company began selling the smart thermostat Ecobee3 in North American stores on Tuesday, as first reported by The Verge.

The device costs about $250 and is the first HomeKit enabled thermostat to go on sale in Apple stores.

Because the Ecobee3 integrates HomeKit technology it can be controlled with the iPhone or iPad and with voice commands via Siri.

It's worth noting that Apple already sold the Ecobee3 as well as the more popular Nest smart thermometer on its website. However, Ecobee3 probably got into physical stores because Nest is owned by Google, one of Apple's biggest competitors.

While Apple isn't building its own smart home products, at least not yet, it is still gunning to take over your home.

In June, the company announced the first batch of HomeKit compatible devices and revealed the Apple TV (third generation or later) running iOS 7 will serve as the hub for controlling HomeKit enabled devices remotely.

Even though the company has made a push to get third-party manufacturers to integrate its smart home technology, there are still only a few of devices that actually work with HomeKit. As of June, which is when Apple last updated its list of HomeKit enabled devices, there were less than 20 compatible products.

Of course, Apple isn't the only tech company trying to take over your home. Google-owned Nest makes a camera and smoke detector in addition to its smart thermostat. And Amazon recently began taking mass orders for its Echo smart speaker, which also lets you control select smart home products via voice commands.
