Marko Zlatic never imagined he would be earning more money as a YouTube creator than in his previous career in finance.

Zlatic started his YouTube channel a bit over two years ago, and in mid-2019, he left his job to focus on YouTube full time. Today, he posts videos twice a week to his channel, WhiteBoard Finance (298,000 subscribers), sharing videos about personal finance, stocks, and real-estate investing.

Zlatic is part of a community of YouTubers who film videos dedicated to teaching their audiences about personal finance, like Andrei Jikh who quit his day job for YouTube and made over $100,000 in his first year, and entrepreneur Marina Mogilko, who runs three successful YouTube channels.

YouTube videos earn money through ads placed by Google and the rate YouTube pays creators is called the CPM rate, or cost per 1,000 views. Videos focused on business or finance generally earn more money through ads, per view, than other videos (like vlogs or beauty tutorials) because this type of content attracts a demographic that's valuable to advertisers.

Mogilko told Business Insider that she makes around $10 per every 1,000 views on Silicon Valley Girl, her business channel. Her language channel, Linguamarina, makes an average of $4 per 1,000 views. Her third channel, the lifestyle one, makes even less than that, at $2 per 1,000 views.

Zlatic said his audience is made up of primarily people aged 20 to mid-50s who are generally in a higher income bracket than the average YouTube viewer.

His average CPM rate ranges from $20 to $27 per 1,000 views, he said. That's four times what the average creator earns, which is about $5 per every 1,000 views, several top creators told Business Insider.
