We tried Everlane's updated take on the classic utility jumpsuit — while the quality is a great value for $100, we had mixed feelings about the oversized fit

With an ever-expanding roster of cool closet staples, it's no wonder shoppers flock to Everlane. The Insider Reviews team has tried plenty of Everlane styles over the years and many of us have built our own wardrobes around the brand's basics.

If a jumpsuit isn't on your list of wardrobe staples already, it's time to reconsider. Jumpsuits make a style statement but they're also one of the most low-effort pieces you can find. With pants and a top all in one, could there be anything easier?

The Modern Utility Jumpsuit is Everlane's iteration of the classic coverall. The one-piece is made out of a stretch cotton twill, which is lightweight but still feels substantial. There are patch pockets that offer practical storage and a utilitarian look, and a belt that adds some definition around the waist. It comes in four neutral colors: Dark Indigo, Sandstone, Brass, and Black. We tried the jumpsuit for ourselves and had mixed feelings. At $100, it's a high-quality piece for the price. However, even though we liked the style overall, neither of us felt that it fit us perfectly. Keep reading for our full reviews.

Sally: Size 10 in Sandstone

The fit:

I love jumpsuits, but at just over 5-foot-1, it's pretty hard to find ones that fit me right. This jumpsuit from Everlane almost worked for me, but the length is a bit too much. The pants are somewhere in between boot-cut and wide-leg, so they look a little messy when rolled up. I wish the legs had been just a bit more tapered so there wasn't so much fabric at the hem. For reference, I had to roll the pants three times in the photos above — a fourth roll was too bulky, even though it would have given me the length I was looking for.

Sizing:

I opted for a size 10 even though I'm usually an 8 or so, which may have contributed to the added length. But I generally find Everlane's sizing can run small for certain styles so I sized up — I could have been fine with an 8, but I don't think it would have affected the length much.

Other considerations:

That said, I've still worn it plenty of times, and I think it would work really well for anyone who's at least a couple inches taller than I am. It's aesthetically a great jumpsuit, and the length is really the cause of all my frustrations — I'm sure if I got it hemmed, it would look great.

For anyone who's taller than me and still deciding on whether to buy it, I'll say this: The material is a perfect weight for warm weather, but it can be layered well with a turtleneck or T-shirt underneath for added weight. The belt gives some shape to it, but wearing it without a belt works too for a more laid back look (it looks great with white sneakers).

The fit:

I really liked this jumpsuit in theory, but in practice, I was underwhelmed. I'll start off by saying I have never been super confident that I could pull off the utility jumpsuit style, which could definitely factor into my opinions here. Realistically, though, I felt that the shape of this one-piece didn't do much for me. The top was overwhelming for my small chest and the waist hung too low beneath my actual waistline to look flattering. From behind, it looked like my butt was donning a potato sack.

A heel might make this look a little sleeker, but overall I just didn't like the way this fell on my frame. That being said, if you like the oversized coverall look, I think you really could enjoy this style.

Sizing:

I'm 5-foot-6 and opted for a size 2, smaller than I typically would go, but even so, I felt that the piece swallowed my shape. I tried to remedy that with the belt to make it look a little more fitted around the waist, but doing so just led to the excess fabric being pushed up to the top and looking rather odd around my chest.

Other considerations:

For me, the best part of a jumpsuit is the ease of wear. With this style, I felt like I had to do a lot of pulling and prodding to make it feel like something I'd feel good about myself in. If you, like me, prefer a more fitted style, I'd recommend the Alex Mill Standard Jumpsuit — it's soft, lightweight, and has an adjustable waistband that helps you get the right fit.

The bottom line:

Overall, this wasn't our favorite jumpsuit or our favorite Everlane piece ever. For the price, it's really high quality and has a cool aesthetic that's on-trend right now. But, we both found that the fit wasn't the best for our body types. Of course, we are only two people. If you like a more oversized look, you will probably love the way this falls on you. If you like a utilitarian look and don't really want something more fitted, I think you'll really like this.
