Russian forces used drones to attack Ukrainian civilians — including children — waiting in line for humanitarian aid in the Kherson region on Thursday, Ukrainian officials alleged.

According to Ukrinform, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office released a statement accusing Russian drones of attacking a group of civilians who were waiting for help outside a school.

Ukrinform reported that nine people, including one child, were injured so far.

"They are being provided with professional medical aid," the prosecutor's office said.

Insider could not independently verify the allegation.

The attacks reportedly occurred in Beryslav, a district in the southeastern city of Kherson.

Russia originally captured Kherson in March 2022, the first major win for Russian President Vladimir Putin in the early days of the war.

As Ukrainian forces launched counteroffensives in eastern and southeastern regions, they managed to liberate the area towards the end of 2022. Russian officials announced a full retreat from Kherson in November 2022.

But Insider previously reported that troops left behind deadly booby traps throughout the city and its surroundings.

One such trap included a street sign that read "Mines Ahead" and directed people to take a purportedly safe side road. That the side road reportedly contained a minefield.

Russia's retreat from Kherson also revealed evidence of a slew of possible war crimes, including torture, against the city's residents.
