Two people died in a shooting incident at a Mercedes-Benz plant on Thursday in southwestern Germany, local police said.

A 53-year-old man was arrested after entering the Mercedes-Benz Daimler factory in Sindelfingen at 7:45 am local time and shooting two men, a press release by Ludwigsburg police said.

Both men who were shot were 44-years-old, police said. After the shooting, the shooter was immediately detained by security guards on site and handed over to police who subsequently arrested him without any resistance.

The factory hall has been evacuated and employees are being supported by police and Mercedes staff, police said confirming that there's no further danger to employees or the general population.

Mercedes-Benz confirmed to Reuters that the two men were employees of an external service provider.

The Stuttgart prosecutor's office additionally told Reuters that investigators are working on the assumption that there's only one perpetrator and no individuals outside the factory were involved.

The Sindelfingen plant employs around 35,000 people and produces several Mercedes-Benz models including the S-Class model and the E-Class model, according to its website.

Mercedes-Benz did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment about the incident.
