SBF's parents could have every text, call, and download monitored while their son is under house arrest

New modifications to the bail conditions for disgraced FTX cofounder Sam Bankman-Fried proposed Friday would subject every phone call, text message, and downloaded app on his parents' personal devices to possible review by the courts.

In a letter to Judge Lewis Kaplan Friday, Bankman-Fried's attorneys presented a new solution to monitoring digital activity in the household. The attorneys told the court earlier this week they were facing issues implementing software on his parents' phones that could take a picture of the user every five minutes to monitor who is using the devices, as they learned the monitoring software they installed was unable to do that.

The monitoring of his parents' devices to ensure he isn't using them was one of several previously agreed-upon conditions for Bankman-Fried to be allowed to remain out of jail on house arrest until his trial over fraud allegations and other charges related to the collapse of FTX.

Friday, his attorneys proposed using the software they already downloaded to monitor activity on his parents' devices while he remains under house arrest in their home, which is located on the Stanford campus and has drawn attention from local residents.

Under the new proposed conditions, the monitoring software would instead be used to track every keystroke, app download, internet search, text message, and phone call sent and received by his parents' phones. The activity would be reviewed by a "technical consultant," who could inform the court if any of the activity could be a violation of Bankman-Fried's other bail conditions, or the court could request the data if they believe a violation has been committed.

Bankman-Fried has largely been restricted from internet use in the current bail agreement and has also been barred from contacting current or former FTX employees over allegations of witness tampering earlier this year. Other bail conditions have included limiting Bankman-Fried to a cell phone without internet access, and only allowing him to use a laptop capable of visiting select websites or using certain programs.
