This Australian has become an Instagram star crocheting absurd food-shaped hats
An Australian man has gained Instagram fame by crocheting food-shaped hats, then snapping selfies while he models them with a bummed-out or bored expression.
It sounds pretty weird. But for some reason, the photos are irresistible.
The man behind the account is Phil Ferguson, who both crochets the hats and models them in the photos. Since starting the account less than a year ago, he's garnered 116,000 followers.
Ferguson told BI he's been crocheting for four or five years. He started when he was bored one day and wanted to try out knitting with his sister.
His crocheted creations are usually food- or emoji-inspired. He created the one pictured below because he works in a burger shop.
He also used to work in a pizza shop.
He's made a few hats that aren't food-related, but he thinks he'll stick to the food ones for the time being now that it's become his trademark, he said.
I asked why Ferguson looks so serious in so many of his photos. "That is the unfortunate combination of having eyebrows that slope down and a mustache that also slopes down," he said. "It's just what my face looks like funnily enough!"
