This move isn't surprising given the current state of the "deals" market, which was once a hot sector but is now floundering. Big players Groupon and LivingSocial, which is owned in part by Amazon, have been forced to fire chunks of their staffs.

Earlier this month, LivingSocial laid off 200 employees, a full 20% of its workforce, according to TechCrunch. And Groupon announced in late September that it would lay off 1,100 people and shut down its operations in seven countries.

Other "deals" that Amazon offers will not be affected by Amazon Local's closure. Amazon told TechCrunch that business will continue as usual for its "Deal of the Day, Gold Box Deals and Kindle Daily Deals."

Earlier this month, Amazon shut down short-lived Amazon Destinations, a hotel booking site it launched in April.
