India’s food regulator to launch ‘rigorous’ inspections on food companies

  • India’s food regulator Food Safety and Standard of India (FSSAI) will reportedly begin ‘rigorous’ inspections on food companies to verify food standards, including safety concerns and quality of prepared and packaged products.
  • The government body, through food inspections, will check if the food businesses are adhering to the standards that have been laid by the body.
  • To figure out the areas where the problem exists, the food regulators will conduct survey for risk assessment. A survey has also been conducted recently on milk and dairy products.
Aiming to bring trust among the citizens, India’s food regulator Food Safety and Standard of India (FSSAI) will begin ‘rigorous’ inspections on food companies to verify food standards, including safety concerns and quality of prepared and packaged products, reported the Press Trust of India.

On Thursday, the food regulator’s CEO, Pawan Kumar Agarwal, reportedly said that they will also view the food products already in market to check quality. He added that a survey has been conducted recently on milk and dairy products as well, since Indian citizens are yet not confident about the safety measures taken while cooking and packaging of food.

New assessments

The food regulator plans to check if the country’s food businesses are adhering to the standards that have been laid by the body.

In addition to this, self-compliance and risk assessment surveys will be a part of its new inspection programme, which will also help build a database of food assessment.

The government has also approved a plan to train food safety inspectors as well as, add 800 posts to boost its scientific research efforts.
