Amazon has missed on analysts' EPS expectations for the last six quarters.

After the company released its Q3 report, its stock tanked on top-and-bottom line whiffs, as well as a significant operating loss of $544 million. The losses were caused in part by increased R&D spending, including a $170 million hit from its flopped Fire smartphone (it had $83 million worth of unsold inventory at the end of the quarter).

The company gave similarly bleak Q4 guidance, predicting operating losses between $430 and $570 million.

One thing to look for in the earnings is whether or not Amazon will announce how many Prime subscribers it has. The company has spent the year pouring money into original video content to help beef up the offerings of its $99 subscription service.

Amazon wants to lure people to Prime because members spend more than double what non-members do on the site, according to a recent CIRP survey.
