The sitting MLA of this constituency who won from this seat in 2015 general elections is Parmila Tokas of AAP who scored 54645 votes defeating the BJP candidate who got 35577 votes from here. In 2013 elections, the winner from the RK Puram seat was BJP’s Anil Sharma who got 28017 votes against the AAP candidate Shazia Ilmi Malik who got 27691 votes. IN 2008 and 2003 elections, Barkha Singh of INC won from this seat for two consecutive terms scoring 35878 and 22591 votes respectively. In both these elections, the runner up candidates were BJP contestants.

RK Puram state legislative assembly seat falls within the portals of New Delhi parliamentary constituency of Delhi. RK Puram has a total number of 149955 voters including 84303 men, 65648 women and 4 third gender voters. The present ruling term of the AAP government sitting on the throne of Delhi assembly will end on 22 February 2020. Hence all the 70 assembly constituencies of Delhi assembly including RK Puram will go for general elections in February 2020 as per the announcement by the election commission of India.

RK Puram assembly seat has existed from 1972 and it has so far seen nine assembly elections. Till date, INC had won this seat four times in 1972, 1998, 2003 and 2008 elections. BJP had won three times from RK Puram in 1983, 1993 and 2013 elections. JNP and AAP had won from here one time each in 1977 and 2015 elections respectively. The vote score of 54645 got by the AAP candidate Parmila Tokas in 2015 elections was the highest any contesting candidate had got from this assembly seat.
