Entrepreneur Mark Cuban said he was "cautiously optimistic" about Elon Musk molding Twitter into a safe social-media platform.

Cuban on Sunday tweeted about how he considered safety Twitter's biggest challenge. Cuban said although Musk's Twitter had no competition, it lacked safety for its users.

"Like all entrepreneurs, the vision when you start, rarely is the place you end up," Cuban wrote in a tweet, adding that it was a "learning, iterative process."

"It's only been a few weeks. Elon Musk is smart and been here before. I'm cautiously optimistic he figures it out and the platform is safe and sustainable," Cuban said.

Cuban's comments came after he said Musk's move to reinstate former President Donald Trump's Twitter account was a "smart marketing move."

He later called Twitter a "content aggregator" and said the company aimed to persuade people their tweets would be seen so they would pay $8. Cuban said the company was doing so despite knowing 99 per cent of tweets had "minimal to no engagement."

Cuban previously celebrated Musk's acquisition of Twitter, tweeting that he was "looking forward" to the Musk era and describing him as a "ready, fire, aim entrepreneur."

Since the takeover, Cuban has tried to give Musk advice about the $8 fee for Twitter Blue, but Musk bluntly turned it down.

Safety on Twitter has been an area of concern in recent weeks. Yoel Roth, Twitter's former head of trust and safety, resigned from the role on November 10. Other staff from Twitter's privacy and security unit have also left, including its chief information security officer, its chief privacy officer, and its chief compliance officer.

After the departures, the Federal Trade Commission told The Washington Post it was "tracking the developments at Twitter with deep concern."

Roth wrote in an opinion piece for The New York Times that Twitter was safer under Musk's leadership.
