Well, this is a part of the technology evolution. One of the easiest ways to move users from an old operating system or a phone to the new one is to stop supporting that particular eco-system. In the manufacturers defence, why should they spend their valuable resources on an outdated service when they are giving a spanking new one and is more secure. Skype is the latest example, which will compel the existing users on Windows Phones 7 to either upgrade them to a Windows 8 device or stop using the service all together.

The move comes when most of the Skype application users have opted to move on to the Windows Phone 8 app and there are just a small number of users on the old one. But users who are still on the old OS and want to use the software can do so as it will continue to be available on the WP marketplace.

Not upgrading makes sense for people who use the app sparingly, but if you are a regular user of Skype on Windows Mobile, then upgrading makes better sense. As lot of the new features have been added to the WP 8 app and security is more robust here. Also, you might not want to miss the nice video messaging feature on the new app.
